Run by twin sisters Isabelle and Sabine Menthon, the estate was started by their father following the killing freeze of 1956. While he died last year, they are continuing in the same vein, with destemmed grapes, indigenous yeasts and relatively long élevage. The 30-hectare estate includes parcels in Gigondas, Côtes du Rhône and Ventoux, but the bulk of the land is in Beaumes de Venise, near the village of Suzette. There, the sisters say, they get an ideal combination of concentration and freshness. The style here emphasizes elegance over power, the premise they say was the original concept behind the Beaumes de Venise appellation. In these wines, you can definitely taste that—they're Chambolle-seductive, silky rather than muscular."
